Kenzo Jungle L'Elephant Kenzo perfume. Tastes vary luckily, interpretations of the same fragrance also. Reviews can be short and they can be very long, like this one. I apologise, but there is so much to say about this one. There have been threads on Fragrantica why the same frag smells totally differnt to various people. That's why good fragrances can trigger memories, but can also smell totally different to people. For me 'L'Elephant' is a mighty spicy oriental. It is even one of my favorites! Mostly I love dense classics like 'Coco' and Cartiers 'Le Baiser du Dragon'. I also like this one that is more spicy dry and 'odd' than my other more classic favorite fragrances.
This is my personal real 'spicebomb'. More spicy than balmy and cozy, but also one of the great almost 'forgotten' great frangrances in a more modern, oriental- spicy, but not japanese- minimalistic way. The first 'Comme des Gar. Excotic, spicy, warm, yet dark and mesmerising. It is so different and unique! Watch Two Men In Town (2015) Online. Sure 'unique' is one of the most used words in reviews. But unique here means UNIQUE!
I am not crazy about all other Kenzo's, with exception of '5. Madagascar', but 'L'Elephant' is an ace of an fragrance.
Original, creative but contrary to a lot of niches, very wearable. And it differs from mainstream frags like a hamburger from a Thai spicy 'tom yam' soup. The mystery, mysticism and spices of street foodstalls in the East captured all in one bottle. Faut- le- faire! It is not a linear fragarance or course, you need some time to discover it's beauty, like a man needs time to discover the secrets of a woman.
Which he by the way, never will. Just like you'll never discover all the secrets of this intricate fragarance, I'm afraid. It is not an 'easy' fragance, but once you are into it, it is a drug. A hard drug at that.
It's the difference between a flash in the pan 'falling in and out of lust', and 'falling madly, deeply, truly in love'. No review can do it justice, this one neither, I'm well aware of that. It is only trying to do the impossible: capturing the wonder of 'L'Elephant' in words. I would classify 'The Elephant' as warm spicy- woody- dry. When I looked at the notes before trying it, I was very intrigued. When I actually smelled it, I was gobsmacked, in awe, blown away and smitten forever.
It is not a cozy floral or dense French clssic like 'Organza' or 'Coco', it is more dry and left- of- mainstrea. M. The Elephant and me, it will be love for life. Because it is such a special fragrance, ven it it doens't fit my 'preference profile'. There is nothing like it. So no replacements, no alternatives..
This is 'The One and Only' of its kind. And boy, what a beautiful, weird, addictive fragrance it is!
And it is everything you read in this review. And more. Look at that great fragrance pyramid! Look at those highly original fragrance notes put togheter even more creatively. And the strange combination of those strange notes, actually works great in a very original way. Forget all your preconceptions about 'spicy fragances'. This has a mindset of its own. No, it is not an unwearable gimmick like 'S.
It is a true perfume, and a great one. Because I had not so great experiences with watery Kenzo's like 'Kenzo Pour Homme', I didn't think he had such a fragrance in his house.
But of course it is nose Dominique Ropion who is the driving force behind this masterpiece. As weak as most of Kenzo's frags are - and God plus readers of my reviews know I'm no fan of watery, weak, aquatic frags- so strong is Kenzo's 'L 'Elephant'. Too bad Kenzo didn't hire nose Ropion longer. They could have had a blockbuster like Ropions other tour the force, 'Alien', in their house and not in Mugler's perfume casa. OK, what does this fragrance wonder smells like? Top: Mandarin/Orange, cloves, cardamon.
Middle: Caraway, mango, heliotrope, ylang ylang, licorice. Base: Amber, patchouli, vanilla. Uber nose Dominique Ropion (Caron's 'Aimez Moi', CK 'Euphoria', a lot of Fr. First a very classic, 'lightly sweet', almost neutral base that is excellent to let the middle and top go all the way. A blank canvas of good quality to let the colors of middle and top create magnificent sparkles, let hem shine and create fiery fireworks on this undisturbable solid base.
The amber is the anchor point for the middle and top that keeps all the notes longer on the skin and makes fusing and interaction more easy and frequent. The patchouli gives the base some deepness and very interesting contrasts with the spicy and unusual middle and top notes.
The vanilla of the not too cloying kind gives a nice some much needed spicy sweetness. It is a spicy, 'dark' vanilla, not the cotton candy caramel kind, but the smokey vanilla of 'Vanille Noire de Mexique' or Chopards 'Casmir. But all in all a very simple yet effective and strong 'no nonsense' base. Nothing spectacular, but solid to create some quiet in the storm of the exotic fireworks that the middle and top provide with bucket loads. Secondly: the middle and the top are undoubtedly the stars here. In a one of a kind combination of equally one of a kind fragrance accords. Thirdly: the spices are very present, much more than in other so called 'spicy' fragrances.
Fourthly: there are very some unusual notes in the middle and the top that give birth to some very unique contrasts. The spices are great. They are mostly positioned upfront and in yournface in the top: cloves and cardamon. Very unusual and daring. Mostly spices come in the middle.
But here they are upfront to let the user by first spritz know: 'Hey: I'm a Spicy One. If you don't like it, move on!' This frag takes no prisoners. The clove and cardamon are positioned against the fresh but also 'meaty' mandarin/orange which makes it a simple but strong and very stand out top. If it would have been bergamot in the top, as is mostly the fresh note of choice in the top, that top would have been weaker IMHO. The middle is something else! A most unusual but interesting combo, one of the most original, yet captivating that I've come across.
And this unique middle 'makes' this fragrance. And gives 'L' El. We have the 'meaty' florals ylang ylang and heliotrope, there is the mango that is mostly used in abundance in fruity florals. It can dominate all other notes easily if it is used in a too big dose. Used as main note it is perfect for a linear fruity floral in the celeb scent vein. Mango tolerates other notes with difficulty. It wants to be boss and tries to push other notes under its weight.
But used in moderation and set against other strong and contrasting notes, 'mango' is great and exotic and naturally sweet and lightly spicy note. And then we get the not much used but highly aromatic spice caraway, that smells a bit like the more used and a bit 'controversial' 'dirty' cumin. And it makes a perfect match with the last but not least middle note: licorice! The duo licorice- caraway makes this middle something very special. And is maybe responsable for the medicinal smell that some pick up in 'L'Elephant'. Aahh, the great underrated licorice! It is deep dark, sweet, bitter, spicy..
Very strong but set against an equally strong ylang ylang- heliotrope- mango combo and teamed up with his pal caraway, it smokes! Combine this one- of- a- kind middle with the cardamon- clove- mandarin/orange top and you create fragrance fireworks. Nothing less. Licorice- orange, licorice with the spices, mango with cardamon- cloves, 'dirty' caraway with fruity mango, 'dirty' caraway with the textbook 'civilised' floral ylang ylang, cardamon- cloves- caraway- licorice against mango- ylang ylang- heliotrope- orange, the interactions are endless and intensive and inventive, which results in a vivid, living, constantly evolving frag on the skin. All kinds of interactions in the spicy- floral- fruit- dirty- smoky- vanilla region occur.
